Hello!

It’s great to have you here, and a very warm welcome to my Substack. My name is Huw Richards and I’m a passionate gardener and author. Having started gardening from the age of 3 on my parent’s smallholding in mid-west Wales, I then started a YouTube channel at the age of 12 thanks to being inspired by my friend starting a gaming channel.

Whilst I enjoyed gaming, I didn’t want to tread on his toes, and so gardening was the natural choice - obviously!

Much to the amusement of my classmates, I persisted with making gardening videos

If you want to share the same amusement my classmates had, you can watch my first ever video here.

Fast forward to today, where I have been creating videos for over 13 years, my channel has amassed almost 100 million views, and I have books in over a dozen languages. My gardening is driven by a curiosity for experimentation, and the joy of growing flavours that you cannot buy from any shop.

For the next stage, I have come on to Substack, a decision which is briefly explained in this post.

The core of my Substack is the Huw’s Garden Journal newsletter, where each week, I share seasonal tips, advice and inspiration to help you get the most from your garden, with an emphasis on growing for flavour and feeding your family nutritious homegrown food.
